Carmen Centeno was working at the Wellness Center in Northwood High School when her former student came in to eat lunch in her office. He said that he had earned his associate's degree in education and told her that he never would have finished school without her.
Centeno grew up in San Salvador but had to migrate to the U.S. when she was 14-years-old due to the civil war.Â
When she came to the U.S., only Centeno, her mother and brother were able to receive asylum in this country, leaving her father behind and facing family separation.Â
It wasnât until she was able to get her citizenship that she was able to see her father - after eleven years.Â
She says that the first few years in the U.S. were difficult. Her family slept in a bodega for two years on the floor and oftentimes didn't have a bed or food.Â
UU.
She graduated high school in 2009 and then went to Montgomery College immediately after for two years but ultimately left school when her mom lost her job and Centeno had to help her with finances.Â
She started her journey at UMD in 2021 taking 2 classes at a time. She is currently studying Spanish and is planning to apply to graduate school to study Spanish Language and Literature.Â
