James Harden caught the ball on the right wing, took two dribbles, put the ball between his legs, then drained his 2,974th career 3-pointer, passing Ray Allen for second on the NBA’s all-time 3-pointers list.
The Clippers guard finished the game 2-for-8 from beyond the arc with 20 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in a Sunday night win vs. the Jazz.
“Unbelievable accomplishment,” Harden said about his record-breaking night. “Just a testament to the amount of work that I’ve been putting in.”
The Clippers guard is behind only Steph Curry for most 3-pointers made. Curry currently holds the record with 3,782 career 3-pointers.
“Steph don’t count,” Harden said with a smile before his game against the Jazz. “I’m gonna consider myself No. 1.”
Harden added after the game that he doesn’t anticipate anyone, himself included, beating Curry for the top spot.
“I’m one of the most confident guys that we have in this league. But no, I probably won’t catch Steph. And I don’t think anyone will honestly,” Harden said. “Somebody has to have an unbelievable career, shoot the ball well and make a lot of 3s. I mean if it happens, it’s going to be when we’re not here anymore.”
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue praised Harden’s multidimensional scoring ability and his tough shot-making.
“To be a scorer, the way he can score at all three levels,” Lue said. “And then be second all-time in 3-pointers made is crazy and a lot of tough 3s – off the dribble, step back, pocket 3s, pulling up off the dribble in pick-and-rolls.”
Harden can add this recent accomplishment to a long list of career achievements – just this month, he moved up to 19th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, passing Kevin Garnett.
“I just want to give motivation to the youth and every other person that’s chasing their dream,” Harden said.
