Maryland voters approved a constitutional amendment that codified the right to reproductive rights in the state on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Senate Bill 798, passed last year by the Maryland General Assembly, aims to preserve the “fundamental right to reproductive freedom” for all residents of the state.

The Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment would prevent the state government from directly or indirectly denying reproductive rights without explicit justification from the state government.

Reproductive rights are already protected through Maryland Code, Health-General § 20-209, which states that Maryland cannot “interfere with the decision of a woman to terminate a pregnancy.”

The bill would make it considerably more difficult for the law to be overturned.
